Lactation Classes

Breastfeeding Basics & Newborn Care prepares new parents for the fundamentals of feeding and caring for a newborn with an emphasis on the HOW TO’s. This workshop is included in our Childbirth Education series but can be taken as an individual offering as well.

The following topics will be addressed:

  • basic anatomy & physiology of lactation
  • short and long term benefits of breastfeeding
  • prenatal preparations for breastfeeding
  • establishing good latch and position
  • preventing and identifying common problems
  • how to tell if the baby is getting enough milk
  • recognizing hunger cues / infant behavior
  • pumping, storing, partner involvement in feeding
  • newborn appearance and behavior
  • newborn procedures (vitamin K, erythromycin,newborn screen)
  • umbilical cord care
  • bathing / diapering / dressing
  • sleep patterns / safe sleep environment
  • soothing techniques
  • bonding
  • taking an infants temperature
  • choosing a pediatrician
